Housing advice for care leavers
We provide housing support and advice to young people leaving care.
You must meet the following criteria:
- Be looked after and accommodated away from home for 13 weeks after your 14th birthday.
- Past the school leaving date when discharged from the looked after system.
- Discharged from the looked after and hearing system after the age of 16.
The options available when a young person leaves care and temporary accommodation is needed:
- Supported Lodgings
This can be a great stepping stone from leaving care into independent living. You will get your own room within a family home setting. The people offering the placement assist you in gaining independent living skills.
- Bed & Breakfast
This is only used in emergencies, when no other accommodation is available.
Until suitable accommodation can be secured this is used as a temporary stop gap. A room is provided with shared amenities.
- Supported Accommodation
These are projects for young people. Support is provided to gain the skills to live independently. A room is provided with shared amenities.
- Scattered Flats & Shared Flats
These are single or shared furnished flats. Support is provided to help you live more independently.
A Housing Officer can help you complete a Housing Application form. They will explain the process and the expectations of you having your own tenancy. They also provide support for you to gain independent living skills. Your application will be re-assessed once you have reached that stage and the relevant points added to get you housed.
When a suitable property becomes available, you will be supported in your tenancy.
